40 Days of Surrender
In 40 days of surrender, God can do miraculous things! I have experienced it and know many others who have as well. Are you willing to give it a try? See how God can change your life for the better.
Why 40 Days?
There are many 40 day and 40 year periods referred to in Scripture. God waited 40 years after Moses left Egypt to call him back to save His people. Goliath stood against the Israelites for 40 days before David slew him. The disobedient Israelites wandered in the desert for 40 years before being brought to the Promised Land. Jesus fasted and prayed in the desert, where He was tempted, for 40 days before He began His public ministry. And Jesus showed Himself to over 500 witnesses for 40 days after He arose from the dead, before He ascended to heaven.
Do you see a pattern there? There were 40 days (or years) of difficulties and learning (refining fire) leading up to an awesome event! I believe that when we surrender completely to God, it allows Him to be able to do great things through us.
My 40 Days of Surrender
Many years ago God put a dream in my heart to begin a ministry. I worked at it when I could. However, I didn’t have much time after working all day and doing household chores and errands. When I completed all of those, I was exhausted. So, for many years, a dream was all that it was. I didn’t think it would ever become a reality.
Then I felt God leading me to take 40 days to do some intense praying and allow Him to show me anything that was coming between us. I was amazed at how God opened my eyes to things that kept me from an abundant relationship with him. I began seeing how television, movies, and video games were taking the place of time that could be spent with Him or doing good deeds for others. As He revealed each one to me, I replaced it with time in Scripture or prayer. I began to realize how mind-numbing those old activities really were. After giving those things up, my mind was being awakened to God’s bigger purpose.
I had learned so much from my first 40 day experience that a few months later, I decided to do a second one.
From the first day, I sensed God was telling me to give up my job. At the time, I was working with disabled children. I loved my job and the families I worked with. They needed me. And if I was truthful with myself, I needed them, too. But, God had given me a dream; a bigger purpose. And I needed to stop hiding behind my job.
So, God began impressing on me to give up the job. I argued with Him for three long days. Finally, on the fourth day, I realized that God wanted me to do this for some reason. I didn’t know what the reason was. But, if God wanted me to give up my job, I had to trust Him. I totally surrendered my job to Him. And there was peace.
I didn’t feel the need to write a letter of resignation. I didn’t feel the need to do anything. I just surrendered, left it in His hands, and went off to work as usual. I spent the morning working with one client. On my way to my second client’s home, I got a message to stop in at the office. As I pulled into the parking lot, I was at peace with God and felt His joy in my heart. I skipped into the office and chatted with the staff as I usually did. Then, my supervisor asked me to step into her office. Once I was seated, she began to tell me I had done nothing wrong. But, for no particular reason, they were laying me off, effective immediately. And since they had no reason, I was free to collect unemployment benefits. Normally, someone in that situation would have been devastated. However, God had prepared me ahead of time. I was elated! God was at work before my very eyes! Joy filled my heart! It was all I could do to keep from jumping up and down and shouting His praises! On top of all that, God had provided financially for me. He thought of everything! He knows our needs before we even ask.
God has miraculously been providing for my needs ever since then. This leaves me free to work on the ministry that He laid on my heart many years ago.
What dream has God laid on YOUR heart? Are you fulfilling it? Do you even know what purpose God has prepared for you? I urge you to take 40 days to seek God. Here’s all you have to do:
- Set aside 40 days.
- Take time each morning to pray.
- Surrender yourself totally to God.
- Ask Him to reveal to you anything that is getting in the way of your relationship with Him.
- When He does reveal those things to you, be willing to give it up.
- Keep a journal. This will remind you of the things God tells you. Also, when you look back years later, you’ll see some of the awesome things that God will do when you give Him control.
