Did you ever hear someone say they were “born again?” Ever wonder what they meant by that? Here is a story from John 3:1-8 in the Bible that talks about what it means to be “born again.”
“There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.
Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
Imagine Nicodemus’ confusion. Born again? What does that mean? How can anyone be born a second time? Nicodemus was a scholar and a teacher in the church. Yet he didn’t understand this simple spiritual truth.
Nicodemus was a scholar and a teacher in the church. Yet he couldn’t understand what Jesus was telling him.
Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?”
Jesus’ answer was simple for anyone who has their heart and mind focused on spiritual things.
“Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of flesh is flesh, and that which is born of Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
When we are first born into this world, that is our physical birth. When we accept Jesus into our heart, we are born spiritually. This is our second birth. Our spirit comes alive! We are born again! And we start to live for God.
Being born again is a very exciting time! You want to learn everything all at once. And you want to tell the world what Jesus has done for you. That is fantastic! Don’t ever lose that passion and enthusiasm for Jesus!
