Do You Glow in the Dark?
On Halloween, I saw all sorts of strange things glowing in the dark. People and animals walking around carrying light sticks, or wearing costumes or necklaces that glowed in the dark.
There were two purposes for glowing in the dark.
- To make them visible to others and
- To help them find their way through the darkness.
If they aren’t visible to others, no one will see the fanciful costumes they put so much effort into creating. And if they can’t see where they are going, they may stumble or go the wrong way.
I did notice some people with nothing to light them up. I couldn’t really tell what they were wearing or anything about them. All I saw were dark objects moving around in the dark. That was, until someone shined a flashlight on them or they walked into a doorway that was lit up. Then, I could see that they had some beautiful costumes that must’ve taken a lot of work to prepare. But, I might have missed seeing them if the light hadn’t shown on them.
Our spiritual lives are like that. We have the light of Christ within us, but if we hide it and don’t allow it shine, no one will ever know. If we keep His Light to ourselves, the world around us is left in darkness. No one can see us and we can’t see where we are going.
Jesus is The Light of the World
Jesus described Himself as the Light of the world.
“Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”” John 8:12
Jesus also said:
“I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness.” John 12:4
God’s Word is a Light
God gave us His Word, the Bible, as a guide to keep us from stumbling.
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Psalms 119:105
When we read God’s Word, it will light our way. We can find treasures in it that will show us how God wants us to live and how we should treat others. It will guide us into God’s will for us and teach us the way to abundant life.
And when we memorize Scripture, we will have it whenever we need it. We won’t have to stop what we are doing and look it up.
“Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You.” Psalms 119:11
You Are the Light
When we follow Jesus’ example, we shine with the light of Jesus. We become the light. It spills out in joy and love and good deeds. This is how others can see Jesus in us. We don’t always have to speak it. Our good deeds will demonstrate it.
“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:14
“By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” John 13:35
So, don’t hide your light under a barrel. Hold it up high and illuminate as far as you can!
The World is in Darkness
The world without God is a dark place. Sin is all around us. People hide their evil deeds so they won’t be found out.
“In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.” John 1:4-5
“And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.” John 3:19
When you shine the light of Jesus into the darkness, some people will still duck back into the shadows. They may not be ready to come into the light. But, don’t let that stop you from shining just as brightly as you can.
Shine as Lights in the Darkness
Did you ever notice that the stars shine brighter in darkness? The darker it is, the brighter they shine!
“Do all things without complaining and disputing, that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast the word of life….” Philippians 2:14-15
Sometimes We Don’t Feel Like Shining
We have a great opportunity to shine Christ’s light to in the world. And it is when we are going through hard times that gives us an opportunity to shine brighter than ever!
Someone without God, doesn’t go through struggles in the same way as one who has hope in an eternal life with God. Our heavenly Father gives us peace and strength in the difficult times. So, unbelievers watch in wonder as we go through trials with patience and tranquility. This will often lead them to want what we have.
There is a song that my grandson loves to sing. He holds a little light up in the air as we sing:
This little light of mine, I’m going to let it shine. This little light of mine, I’m going to let it shine. This little light of mine, I’m going to let it shine. Let it shine! Let it shine! Let it shine!
During the second verse, I try to cover up his light, but he won’t let me, singing:
I won’t let anyone ffft it out, I’m going to let it shine. I won’t let anyone ffft it out, I’m going to let it shine. I won’t let anyone ffft it out, I’m going to let it shine. Let it shine! Let it shine! Let it shine!
So, let your light shine! Shine into the darkness! And don’t let anyone or anything ffft it out!
